Before You Start
Before you start with ESPL
A pre-flight checklist
Four things to know before you download.
You don't have to memorize them — once you download the app and follow the on-screen guidance, getting started is straightforward.
What this page covers
- Supported devices and OS
- How steps are tracked
- Permissions and integrations to know
- Where the wallet and JPYC fit (defer until you need them)
01 / Pre-check
What to check before starting
Supported devices
The ESPL app supports both iPhone (iOS) and Android.
System requirements depend on your OS version. For the supported versions, please check the ESPL app's listing on the App Store or Google Play.
How steps are tracked
ESPL doesn't count steps directly inside the app. Instead, it reads them from your device's health data (HealthKit on iPhone, Google Fit on Android).
You don't need a separate step-counter app. If your device is already recording steps, ESPL will use that data as-is.
Permissions and integrations
ESPL may need a few permissions to operate (reading steps, notifications, etc.). Follow the on-screen guidance and grant what's needed.
Android users may run into extra checks around step-data sync and battery optimization. The Android notes page covers these.
02 / Wallet & JPYC
The wallet and JPYC — read when you need them
ESPL includes an in-app wallet for handling sponsorships, and uses yen-denominated JPYC as the unit.
That said, if you only plan to track your daily steps, you don't have to think about either up front. They appear when you run a challenge with a sponsorship — that's all you need to remember.
If you want to learn about JPYC first, see the JPYC page.
03 / Common Concerns
